Tour Tivoli Hadrian's
Villa - Villa D 'Este
06 hours |
|
Tivoli a fascinating
little
town located at around 30 min from Rome. Famous from the early Roman
era, it was highly-regarded for its thermal waters and baths and also
for its location which expands throughout the entire narrow valley near
the Aniene River, also known as the Teverone. Located on the
Monti
Tiburtini hills where the climate is fresher than Rome is. For this
reason, the area was popular from ancient times onwards with Rome's
moneyed classes, who built summer retreats in the area. As the town was
on a major trading route from Rome to the Abruzzi, Tivoli has always
been an important settlement.
Here
Emperor Hadrian in 117 AC built a residence which is now considered to
be the epitome in architecture of the Roman world, Hadrian’s
Villa. |
 |
The complex was more an
imperial garden city than a traditional villa.
Everything was designed to follow the natural lay of the land. Tivoli
is also known for its other famous attraction… Villa
d’Este. This villa
was designed for the governor Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este. Before being
confiscated as his residence, the property had been a Benedictine
convent.
Along
the trip from Rome to Tivoli our first stop will be Hadrian’s
Villa in
which we will visit for about an hour and a half and from this
astonishing archaeological site or microcosmos built by the Emperor
Hadrian called the “
Graeculus,”
little greek. . Here, in the 2nd century AD, built his
suburban Villa
and created the most sublime settings for his Imperial Court of about
15,000 people. The many palaces, lakes, temples, nimphaei, pools
adorned with Greek statues and Egyptian beasts were dedicated to
Antinoos, Hadrian's handsome lover. A painstaking archaeological
recovery has taken place over the last two centuries, yet you can still
feel their presence and Hadrian's aesthetic sense and his love for
beauty.
we
will head towards Tivoli( Villa d’Este ) where we can admire
its
fountains and gardens, masterpiece of renascence today fortunately open
to the public., built for Cardinal Ippolito d'Este, Lucrezia Borgia's
son. The Villa, which used to be a convent, was turned into a luxurious
Villa d'Otium for the Cardinal who was governor of Tivoli. Built by
Pirro Ligorio, most of the hill surrounding it and the town quarter
underneath was destroyed to create the most beautiful fountains, well
over 100 of which were meant to enact jets d'eau at the sound of the
organs and music created by Palestrina. An incredible setting not be
missed on your next trip to Rome!
